Everyone left last night without any glitches, thanks for all the great communication about travel plans from players and parents this year. I plan on posting updates about team rankings if the coaches inform me and its possible that the volleyball-festival.com may have updated win/loss schedules on a daily basis. Check back here throughout the week.

RENO NEWS:

I am still having players ask me questions that are easily answered with the news letter emails that we have sent out and and referring them to read them and not ask me about things they should be reading via their emails and especially on the web site.

Travel itens---those not on our group list or not traveling exacting with the flights with the group should have turned in a travel iten to your coach. We need to know where the kids are at all times and when they will be arriving and leaving so that we can ensure their safety. Your coaching staff will be giving you their cell phone numbers to contact them directly in case of an emergency. We all are staying at Circus Circus (775-329-0711).

Airport items---be there two hours in advance so that we may head off any potential problems that might arise. Coaches will have the pocket itens for those traveling in our group with your electronic ticket number to check in . All others should have their own tickets. Bring photo ID with you and be prepared to pay in cash if your bag is over the 50 lb limit. If you bring a second bag, you will be paying $25 for it on the return trip. Dress for the flight down is left up to the coaches as to whether or not you are wearing your uniforms. Look for your coaches when you get to the airport as we will all be in the Alaska check in area. Once your bags are checked, you will get directions when to go through security and then on to the gate. NO ONE goes off to shop or eat unless your coach has given an ok.

Meals---once we get there, I will be giving the coaches meal money for each player and they will distribute it to the players, or hand it out at meals to make sure it is not spent on something else or lost. If teams are getting meal cards, I will give the coaches the cards when they get there and each player’s meal money minus the cost for the meal cards. Your coaches will account to you for all your monies and where it might be spend if we use part of your meal money for meal cards or food items for you to eat breakfast in your rooms.

Pick-ups and visists---coaches must have written permission for your daughters to leave at the end of the tourney with someone or even have someone visit them at the tourney. Visits are at times when they do not interfere with team activities either on or off the court. No permission, no visits as the kids will find out that we are very serious about security. If there is a minor breach in our rules, we sit a player down for a day of play. A serious breach and they are done in the tourney and we could send them home—which we have done only once in the 25 years of trips---at the cost of the parents. You are worried about us keeping your daughters secure in Reno and believe me, we take it very seriously. When they arrive, we will be going over the security rules and putting the fear of _____ in them.

First day----an exhausting flight, then I will pick them up at the airport (a big u-haul) for baggage, coaches pick up the vans, then we will be off to Circus Circus by about 1:30 and unload there about 2:00 pm. Cannot get into our hotel rooms until they release them to us and that is usually between 2 and 4 and we sre at their mercy. Once the kids are assigned rooms, they stay in their rooms until coaches have meetings with them and they are taken to eat. Coaches and chaperones will have required meetings that eveiing, they don’t last long, and then we take the kids to eat and bed them down. Saturday morning will be practices and Sat. afternoons will be opening ceremonies then we begin play on Sunday. All the kids should text home or call home to give you their room numbers as we will have to change rooms around from what the hotel gives us to fit team configurations and security so if you call the hotel info , you might get the wrong room the first couple of days, until we give a new rooming list to the front desk.

Spending money----depends on the family as the kids will have a couple of opportunities to shop. Send what you can budget for the family but not in cash form (more in travel checks) and remind them if they spend it all the first day out, then they are going to be unhappy the rest of the week---that is why the coaches will probably keep their meal money and give it to them before meals so they don’t spend it on shopping.

Additional charges---I remind you that there will be an additional charge to each player when we return as we budgeted for $4 gas, must pay for second bags on the return (ball bags and coolers) and have a charge from the airlines for the 10 seats we did not use of the 60 we paid deposits for back in December. In the past, we have not been charged for the unused seats if we cancelled a month in advance, but not anymore. We paid $40 to each seat and if we did not do that very early, we would have our group, because it is so large, scattered through out several flights. We must reserve a lot and early to give all our players the option of using our seats, their own miles, or do their own tickets, which a lot of them come back to us late saying that there are no mileage seats and can they use one of ours. Thus, with the new rules, we lose the deposits, but that is far better than not having enough seats for our group. I anticipate that the charge when we get back will be an additional $11 or less.

Parent rooms----the three set of parents who reserved rooms in our block through me should have them paid for before we leave and can use their credit cards to me if needed.

Room charges---all the rooms will have phone and movie capabilities but only calling card calls out and any movies must be paid for at the time that they are viewed. No R rated movies will be allowed. Coaches must ok all movies and any room charges at the end will be paid for at that time by those in the rooms.

Packing list----put your playing uniform in your carry on in case your checked bags are lost.

Ready to go? This is a fun trip but an exhausting one for the coaches and chaperones. Please keep mind that these people take time from their jobs and families to make this possible for the kids. Most all the kids are kind and courteous to the staff but there is always a couple that we have to remind that this trip is a privilege and that the coaches and chaperones are not their personal cabs to run them where they want to go when they want to. GET YOUR MONIES IN PLEASE!!!!!

Reno Luggage Update

Groups are not exempt from the new Alaska Airlines baggage allowance rules. Each passenger who checks a 2nd bag will be charged $25.00 and if you pack a 3rd bag they will charge you an additional $100. Each piece of checked luggage still has a maximum weight of 50 pounds and a maximum size of 62 linear inches. If larger than these measurements, there are additional charges starting at $50.00. This fee will be applied at both the Anchorage checkin and the Reno checkin

Virgil has some chocolate bar cases available (limited number) for Reno fundraising. Each case of 50 bars cost $31.25. You will pay Virgil upfront and then keep all the money from the sales. He recommends selling them for at least $1.25 if not $2.00. Please contact the office at 349-1449 if you want to purchase a case.
